Because I have the planning skills of a gnat I agreed weeks ago to let Biscuit have her party this Saturday. Which happens to be the Saturday after a huge work event on Friday. Normally I don't work on Fridays so would have all day for last minute party details but this week I not only have to work but likely won't get home until 11 pm. Likewise Mr. H is totally swamped and stressed at work. It's finals week for his students so the grading is overwhelming.
We've been trying to get stuff done in advance for her party but some stuff just can't be done too far ahead. I did rent the bounce house so that's good.
Luckily Biscuit seems to have a very clear but very simple vision for her party.
- Bounce house (tonight I found out her vision ALSO includes a slip n slide--not sure that can happen)
- Food: hot dogs, potato chips, lemonade
- Cake: decorated to specifications (she made the cake all by herself! and it's in the freezer. decorating supplies have been purchased)
- Other stuff: TBD (we've agreed on water balloon toss and pinata)
Even with that simple list I was feeling overwhelmed
- Clean the house
- Make and decorate cake
- Party Favors
- Buying supplies
- Decorations (not important to her but kinda important to me)
- Grocery shopping
Actually, that doesn't look too bad. But we only have a few hours Saturday morning and I'm pretty sure the cake will take most of the morning.
Anyway, tonight I explained to Biscuit that this was the only evening we had to finish stuff for the party (i'm also working late tomorrow night) so we had to get it together. And we kicked it into gear! Between dinner ending (at 7) and bedtime (at 8:30) and with the help of a toddler we made a waterski shaped pinata! It's drying in the garage!
Why no, it won't win any beauty awards but Biscuit was totally thrilled and it was so awesome to dive into the project together keeping Oscar away from scissors (and box cutters!) hacking up a box, cutting tape, wrapping in brown paper all at super high speed. At one point Biscuit commented that I didn't seem to be having fun. She was right I was getting a bit frantic and that's ridiculous. We were just doing it for fun and what could be more fun than making a giant cardboard waterski pinata?
After the structure was constructed we ran outside with a cup full of glue water and the three of us (Oscar included) were slapping on glue and smushing on paper in the dark. And yes, it is going to be hard to get the candy into the teensy hole I left in the back but aren't you impressed we remembered the rope?
Then we came inside and Biscuit continued cooperating so we mixed up cookie dough (the cookies will be party favors) and even managed to choose what she'll wear for school pictures tomorrow.
Phew! But what a fun evening.
I think we might actually be ready for Saturday. And really, why stress? It's all just for fun and we have a bounce house and good weather predicted. It'll be great.
