I wanted to continue our tradition but we were running out of weekends. So Oscar and I went to Apple Hill on Monday while Biscuit was at school. It was hot (even at 10 am!) and the apple picking didn't last long but we also stopped and got a pumpkin and he didn't get car sick so I'm calling the day a complete success.
In the end we didn't bring home all that many apples. One batch of apple sauce (that I burned); some sharing for apple tasting at preschool and we're down to not that many left.
And I'm thinking that since I haven't done ANY canning all summer it might be nice to make some apple butter. Searching for that recipe (which I haven't tried) led me to this recipe for quince jelly. I tried (and failed) to make quince jelly last year using some quince (stolen) off a hedge near the house. Maybe I'll try it again but with a recipe this time. Quince jelly sounds so fancy. If it's good it'd be perfect for holiday gifting!
Speaking of holiday food gifts, now is the time to order beans if you're thinking about holiday vanilla.... Good lord, the post I linked to is from 2009. That seems like a long time ago.
