This summer rather than one big vacation we are planning a bunch of weekend getaways taking advantage of my part time schedule and everyone else being on school break. It will be our year of many mini road trips.
We took our first one last weekend taking advantage of my work trip to Anaheim to add on a day at Disneyland. From there we headed to Joshua Tree for a super quick trip mostly because Oscar has been interested in "seeing a desert." So we did.
I totally over instagrammed the trip if you follow me over there but it was such a great trip I wanted to share it here.
For Disneyland we arrived at opening and managed to get in a handful of rides without any lines at all. The lines were pretty short all day long.
We took advice from Hither and Thither and during the midday heat/energy slump we got Dole Whip and went to the Tiki Room for a bit of R&R. This was genius. If you do it, skip the Dole float and get the original whip or the pineapple spear. Oscar and I had the right idea. The Tiki Room is a weird little bird show but it's dark and cool and even parents can get in a short snooze if desired. Despite the Tiki Room rest and a few hours back at the room to eat and rest by 10:30 pm we were done. Especially Oscar who dozed off on the walk back to the hotel. I think this might be my new favorite family portrait.
After enjoying the hotel pool Saturday morning we drove the 2 hours to Joshua Tree National Park. We ended up spending only a few hours in the park driving a loop through the Northern part of the park. The kids, Oscar in particular, loved the rock scrambling and the weather was absolutely perfect.
The Joshua Trees had flowers which was cool to see.
On Sunday we took the roundabout drive home and over 12 hours in the car visited two of Mr. H's childhood homes, one singing road (really!), one wild cat sanctuary, a Mexican restaurant and far too many grody gas station bathrooms.
Hopefully the remaining road trips will be equally awesome!
