Lampshade beautification effort

The talented and generous Missy Ballance of Mohair Circus gave me a basket full of "cutter quilt" scraps (several months ago). Even though they were already cut, I had the HARDEST time cutting them again and spent ages trying to decide on the "perfect" project. (these quilt scraps are HAND pieces and HAND quilted with the most meticulous little stitches you can imagine)
100_7757
Last weekend I took the plunge and cut into several of the smallest and most worn out pieces to make over a cheap-o lamp that has been sitting, unplugged in our bedroom for MONTHS while I used an ugly, plastic clip lamp for bedtime reading.
100_7758
I must say, I am pleased with the results, rustic, unfinished edges and all. Biscuit immediately declared it "pretty" so we'll call it a success.
100_7755
On the off chance you have an ugly lampshade and a cutter quilt (or other fabric) here's a quick'n'dirty tutorial (if you can even call it that). Let's call it "a few tips to make your own."

Make a pattern piece out of fabric by using a pen to trace the ridges of one section of the lampshade. You can pin through the lampshade to hold things in place.
100_7672
Cut out your pattern and use it to cut out the relevant number of pieces of quilt--add about a quarter inch when you cut out the pieces, it's easier to trim than to make your fabric larger later! I also found that the sections of el cheapo lampshade were not entirely even.

Also note, my lamp is six-sided (I think this technique might be hard with a square shade but very easy with a circle if you have enough fabric).
100_7748
Almost time to start sewing! Pin your quilt piece in place lining up one side along the center ridge of the boning that attaches the adjoining lamp panels.  Like this: (see how the edge of the quilt falls in the center of the boning?)
100_7754
Ok, now that one edge is trimmed and the piece is pinned in place, start sewing.  I used hand quilting thread (a little thicker than all purpose but, whatever). Tie a knot in your thread and start inside the shade. Stitch as close to the edge of the boning as possible. You want to take long (almost 1 inch) stitches on the inside and very, very short stitches on the outside. Here's a view of the inside of the stitched shade. See the long stitches?:
100_7751
Once I had one side of the first piece in place I stitched the two adjoining pieces at the same time making sure they were butting right up against one another and trimming as needed for fit.
100_7749
Be sure the stitch the top and bottom edges as well and, that's it! If you were feeling all fancy like, you could stitch on some bias tape or hem tape to cover the raw edges but I thought the raw edges were part of the charm (and I'm lazy).
100_7767
Here's to warm lampshades! Oh, one last note, the thick, quilt fabric does block most of the light from going through the shade so this is not a great option if you want the lamp to illuminate a whole room. In my case I wanted the light mostly going downward (so Mr. H can sleep while I read) so this was a perfect solution.

Hooray for cutter quilts and instant gratification projects!

Ok, but do you love your toothpick holder?

100_7281
Growing up we always had a mini Hofbrau House toothpick stein in the cupboard. Ironic since my parents don't really drink beer nor had they been to Germany. I really have no idea where it came from but it was a cupboard fixture. At some point after college I decided I wanted to steal the toothpick holder for my house and discovered, tragically, that my mom had gotten rid of it. Gotten rid of a childhood memory! (sidebar: When I was 4ish she threw away the (grungy) ducky I slept with every night and gave me a new one to replace it. Other than that she was, and continues to be, an excellent mother).

So in 2002 when I was visiting my cousin in Germany I made her take me on a day trip, ostensibly to see the sights of Munich. But, really, to buy this replacement toothpick holder. It's a cupboard fixture.

Claire's blog alerted me to a  "macro bandwagon" running around the internet. Perfect bandwagon for his post.  Hooray for the macro setting--even in low light!

A lot of worms were decapitated

I'm sure this doesn't look like much work (actually, digging the trench wasn't all that bad) but I moved a boatload of rocks to get to this point. Curses to the individual who filled our ENTIRE side yard with a thick layer of golf ball sized rocks.  Makes it much harder to put in a garden.

Luckily the weather has been perfect for outdoor work.

In other news, apparently everyone is into book art. Here's another amazing example.

Luxurious

I'm on vacation today.  Mr. H is at work, Biscuit is at daycare and I'm at home. I do have some guilt about taking Biscuit to daycare when I could be with her but I'm rationalizing that she'll need to be practicing for her school holiday performance on Wednesday.  And I'll make it up to her this afternoon when I pick her up early to decorate "ginger houses" as she calls them.
Ginger_house1
Until then I'll have a bit of me time to finish up some gifts that need to be shipped, to stuff and mail the holiday cards and to get organized for the party we're hosting next weekend.
Dishes
Maybe I should also do some dishes.
Marshmallow2
And finish up this mess that is homemade marshmallows.

If you're a work outside the home mom, please tell me I'm not the only one to abandon my kid at daycare so I can watch tv work on on creating a very special Christmas.

On second thought, don't tell me. I'm going to assume all moms who can do this, do and all moms who don't have any daycare are really jealous right now.

I'm going back to my second cup of coffee.

Costco is nice

I was climbing into bed (early!) and realized I almost forgot to post. Darn it if I almost screwed up NaBloPoMo over forgetfulness!

So Costco is awesome. My parents bought us a washer and dryer from Costco 2.5 years ago as a housewarming gift.  A week ago the washer timer died (second thing to go wrong on this washer--it was a Whirlpool). And Costco TOOK IT BACK. FULL REFUND!!  No hassle, we just drove it over there and they handed me $400+ in cash.  As Biscuit has been saying about everything lately, Costco is nice. Unfortunately Costco does not have any washers for sale in their stores right now (and we don't want to wait 15 days for shipping) so we are buying a replacement at Home Depot. But I would highly suggest making major purchases at Costco.  Totally worth the membership price.

In other news, the turkey shows no sign of thawing. When do I worry? Also, I forgot cranberries on my menu yesterday (but we are having cranberry sauce). And your comments are really making me want sweet potatoes so I bought some tonight. We'll see if I get them cooked.

Ok, off to bed. Must rest for the upcoming two-day cooking extravaganza.  The fridge is stocked but I haven't started ANY of the cooking.

*you know you're hard up for photos when you're posting a shot of your fridge interior ;) Hi there sour cream!

Sorry, I don't think my parents are looking to adopt

I decided to take my mom up on her naive offer of assistance in sorting out the craft room disaster. I got my dad in the bargain as well.  Four(ish) hours of hard work turned this (I can't believe I'm sharing this mess with the internet!!):

Into this (at least you know that I can be tidy. With some help):
100_6074100_6077

Not only are things put away, they are newly (mostly) organized by color and/or material.  And I pulled out a giant box to go to goodwill. Anyone want any fabric? Comment quick and I'll send some. I'm too lazy to take photos but it's mostly country calico stuff, a few yard+ pieces and a bunch of smaller scraps. All washed, none ironed. I'm happy to pack it up to send to you instead of to Goodwill.

Here's an in progress shot:

Since the photos were taken I finished cleaning off the table and got right to work on a new sewing project.  THANKS MOM AND DAD!

First fish. Next chickens.

Several months ago I wanted to get some fish. I thought Biscuit might like them and I knew I'd like them. My co-worker even offered me a free aquarium. But at the time, Mr. H was opposed to fish ownership I didn't care enough to pursue it.  Then, out of the blue, he decided a fish would be a perfect birthday gift for Biscuit so the day of her birthday I got the tank and he bought the fish.

Except he got a beta.  Anyone ever had a pet beta? They are the most beautifully boring fish EVER.  One beta in a big tank makes for a veeeery boring fish tank. And you can't get more because apparently they fight.

So tonight we moved Fred the beta into a vase I pulled out of the box-o-stuff I'm going to drop off at Goodwill any minute now.  I also found a container of goldfish food in the Goodwill box (which is kind of weird I realize). Then we went to Wal Mart and got 10 feeder fish for 11 cents each. Except we only got 9 because the fish scooper man was kind of a dud and gave us one dead one :(

I think Biscuit likes her 9 fish. They are really small but I swear they're in there.

And Fred seems cool with the studio apartment.

Win free tools at Refurber

100_5409
Biscuit had a very nice birthday yesterday but I don't have any photos (except one of the new fish--don't you see him in there?) so I'll save the birthday post for later and tell you instead about how to win free tools at Refurber.  As you may have noticed from the sidebar, I'm an ambassador at a new site where DIY'ers can share advice with one another about their home improvement successes (or disasters).

For the next few months, Refurber is running monthly contests with really awesome prizes. Well, I think they're really awesome because they were chosen by Mr. H. Let me tell you, he knows a thing or two about tools and he said these are awesome tools.  So, if you need an impact driver or a really good stud finder or a Christmas gift for someone who needs an impact driver or a really good stud finder, head on over to this page and enter the contest. Then, to win, you just have to contribute to the site.  Advice articles, comments on other advice, answers to questions, contribute what you can and the best contributor for the month will win.

Last month Paragon Renovations contributed some AWESOME content (and he told me how to fix my running toilet so brownie points to him). Also, Monkey Dad contributed and got a stud finder.

The site hasn't been marketed much yet so let's just say your odds are pretty darn good if you have advice to share. If you don't have advice to share but have questions to ask, submit them to the Q&A section.  My toilet is working great so I can vouch for the Q&A.

What are you waiting for??  Get on over and enter. And feel free to tell your friends.

An unexpected day at home

So yesterday I apparently left my car keys in my coat pocket and my coat in Mr. H's car and I didn't realize it until he was already at work and I was standing at the door with Biscuit dressed for work, lunch made and no way to get anywhere.  Really, really fortunately I didn't have any meetings today so I took an impromptu vacation day.
Legos
(she takes after her father with the legos)

A day "stuck" at home with Biscuit. Not bad!
Very_important_objects
(I received this bag of very special items several times, each time expressing surprise and pleasure. Wow, some sunscreen!? And a plastic hammer?! She is a generous gift giver)

It was sunny and lovely and I got just enough urgent work done during her nap that I could enjoy the time she was awake.
Washing_2
(lots of dish washing bubble play leading to several outfit changes)

Tonight I finished up three more doll beds plus their mattresses and pillows. I am still really loving these!

Pumpkin
(this is a sugar pumpkin destined to be pie. In the meantime, it looked cool in the light on the NEW COUNTER.  I love you functional kitchen with counters and cabinets and a DISHWASHER!)

Quilts, kitchens and kid

It's been a crazy/fun 48 hours.

Just over 48 hours ago I finished up this mini quilt. My inspiration was a sunset the other evening after a storm.
Quilt_on_fence_vQuilt_showing_back_v

It's machine pieced and mostly machine quilted with some hand quilting of cloud shapes.  All the fabrics are from my mom's great garage sale score. Ok, one more photo.I like this quilt

36 hours ago I was home watching our kitchen counters be installed. Wahoo, one step closer to done:
Biscuit_in_kitchen
Also note that Biscuit is wearing the most adorable outfit EVER (even though you can't really tell in this picture). AND...that dishwasher you see...is, right this very moment, scrubbing a huge backlog of dishes.  Back to the timeline

30 hours ago I was off to San Francisco on a whim to go to this book launch party. I was too shy to take photos or introduce myself to anyone but I got to hang out with my sister and buy the book (signed). The author, Meg, seemed very nice and it was a fun little party.

27 hours ago Mr. H was putting Biscuit to bed and tooted. He asked Biscuit if she was going to copy him and toot. She scrunched up her face in concentration and effort and then shook her head and said, "No toot. Toot broken."  Oh my gosh how funny is that?

17 hours ago Biscuit fell out of her big girl bed (it doesn't happen often) so I got in bed with her and promptly overslept so 14.5 hours ago I finally made it to work.

15 hours ago the Sacramento Craft Mafia was on tv.

7.5 hours ago I got out of meetings that had lasted 5 hours.

2 hours ago I fixed the dishwasher to garbage disposal connector and 1 hour ago I loaded the dishwasher.

Not bad for 48 (ish) hours.
