2015 Postcard Calendar

Like last year, I made postcard calendars. This year I wanted to make the postcards even easier to use (no cutting required) but figuring out a way to make something that is both a functional postcard and a functional calendar was tricky. I finally decided on transparencies, an imperfect/perfect solution. They're not for everyone but I love a multi purpose product.

All the photos were taken during our summer road trip on the California coast. The wood stands were made by me or Mr. H from spare lumber. And, voila, desk calendar + 12 postcards to mail. Hopefully folks figure out you can choose any month (transparency) to go with any postcard. It's a customizable calendar!

I call this photo "spot the toddler."

I made these mostly for gifts but had them for sale at a friend's holiday craft sale. If you're interested in one I have a few left. $25, includes domestic shipping. Send me an email mdhaworth at gmail.

Displaying collected rocks

On our California coast road trip I found a really cool rock in Santa Barbara and decided to collect a rock at each beach we visited the rest of the trip. I wrapped each rock in a piece of paper grocery bag labeled with the location.

Then I painted a scrap piece of plywood black (while we already had the paint out for the Bunny Goes to Space video shoot) and set the entire thing aside to wait for inspiration.

Inspiration finally hit.

Gonna be honest, I don't love love the final project but I love love having it done. Organized rocks + paint + leaving it out for weeks + toddler= recipe for disaster.

Unrelated: I have updated the look of this here website (still working on finishing touches) and I realized the template I set up doesn't work on mobile. Anyone out there read this blog on a phone withOUT using a feed reader like Feedly or Bloglovin? I know mobile is where it's at and all that but I'm not sure I'm up for fixing it. And I'm not sure if anyone actually visits the blog URL unless they come over from Pinterest so do any regular readers care if it's mobile friendly? Just curious.

Driftwood necklace

Not for the first time, I made a necklace out of found wood.

While on our trip I found this bit of driftwood on the beach I knew it was destined to be a necklace so I put it in my backpack.

I added a band of gold leaf and then the chain. For the chain, I just chopped a short, gold necklace in half with scissors and poked holes in the ends of the driftwood with an awl. A drop of super glue and a pin to shove the chain into the glue and I was done. Not very elegant but it worked and has held up through several wearings.

 

I barely ever wear jewelry but enjoy this piece. A little bit of summer vacation to take into Fall.

This is the third (or so) in my series of natural souveniers. I've got at least one more coming up--I'm having fun!

Driftwood mobile

Oscar's room has a bird mobile that Mr. H absolutely loves watching. I've been wanting to make a bit more grown up mobile for our room and when I saw the driftwood covered beaches on our roadtrip I knew it would be a driftwood mobile.

Just like the bird mobile it's sticks, itty bitty eye hooks and fishing line. Well under $5 worth of supplies. And I really like it! I also learned the trick to balancing mobiles really is to start at the bottom.

Finally, I seem to be starting a bit of a series--I think I'll call it "decorating with natural souvenirs." Stay tuned for next installments.
